Ensuring Safety, Hygiene, and Compliance in Home Care
At Alpine Home Medical, maintaining clean and well-functioning medical equipment is an essential part of patient safety and infection prevention. As an ACHC-accredited DME provider, we follow strict standards set by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to ensure every piece of equipment meets regulatory and clinical quality requirements.
Proper cleaning and maintenance protect both patients and caregivers from infection risks and equipment malfunction. This guide provides clear instructions on how to clean and care for your home medical equipment safely and effectively.
ACHC Compliance Requirements
The ACHC DMEPOS Standards require all accredited suppliers to:
- Provide written and verbal cleaning instructions to patients upon setup.
- Use FDA-registered or EPA-approved disinfectants suitable for medical equipment.
- Maintain documented infection prevention protocols for all reusable equipment.
- Educate patients on safe cleaning, handling, and storage of medical devices.
- Replace supplies at manufacturer-recommended intervals or sooner if damaged or contaminated.
- Keep records of cleaning and maintenance for all in-house serviced or reissued items.
By following these practices, Alpine Home Medical ensures compliance with ACHC and CMS standards while helping patients maintain equipment safely at home.
1. Our Approved Cleaning Solution
At Alpine Home Medical, we use Control III Disinfectant Cleaner โ a medical-grade, EPA-registered disinfectant designed for respiratory and DME equipment.
About Control III:
- Safe for use on oxygen concentrators, nebulizers, humidifiers, CPAP equipment, and other non-critical medical devices.
- Effectively kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi commonly found in home healthcare environments.
- Non-corrosive, biodegradable, and formulated for reusable equipment surfaces.
- Approved for use in both professional and homecare settings.
Important:
- Always dilute Control III per the manufacturerโs instructions.
- After disinfection, rinse equipment thoroughly with sterile or distilled water and allow it to air-dry before use.
- Never mix disinfectants or use household cleaners on medical equipment โ these may leave residues or cause chemical reactions.
2. Daily Cleaning for Home Medical Equipment
Regular cleaning prevents buildup of bacteria, dust, and residue. Follow these general steps unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer:
For Oxygen Concentrators:
- Wipe the exterior daily with a clean, damp cloth.
- Keep vents and filters free of dust.
- Clean the humidifier bottle daily with warm, soapy water, rinse, disinfect (using diluted Control III), and air-dry before refilling with distilled water.
- Never use oils, alcohol, or aerosol sprays near oxygen equipment.
For CPAP/BiPAP Equipment:
- Wash the mask, tubing, and humidifier chamber daily or as directed.
- Use mild soap or Control III disinfectant solution.
- Rinse thoroughly with distilled water and let dry completely before reassembly.
- Replace filters, tubing, and cushions per manufacturer guidelines or if visibly worn.
For Nebulizers:
- Wash the mouthpiece, cup, and tubing after each use.
- Once daily, soak all detachable parts in diluted Control III for 10 minutes, then rinse and air-dry.
- Do not share nebulizer parts between users.
For Mobility Aids (Walkers, Wheelchairs, Scooters):
- Wipe handles, seats, and touch surfaces with Control III or a mild disinfectant daily.
- Inspect wheels, brakes, and frames for wear and tear.
- Keep electrical components dry and free of debris.
3. Equipment Maintenance and Inspection
Proper maintenance extends the life of your equipment and ensures reliable performance.
Our Maintenance Guidelines:
- Perform regular visual inspections for cracks, leaks, or loose connections.
- Replace filters and tubing at manufacturer-recommended intervals.
- Do not attempt to repair electrical or pressurized systems on your own.
- Store equipment in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight, moisture, or heat.
- Keep cords organized to prevent tripping hazards.
Alpine Home Medical provides routine maintenance checks for patients with ongoing equipment needs.
If you notice unusual sounds, alarms, or performance issues, contact us immediately for evaluation or replacement.
4. Infection Prevention in Homecare Settings
Maintaining clean equipment is part of your infection prevention plan.
Unclean devices can harbor bacteria, leading to respiratory or skin infections.
Best Practices:
- Wash hands before and after handling medical equipment.
- Avoid touching the inside of tubing or humidifier bottles.
- Replace distilled water daily to prevent bacterial growth.
- Store clean equipment away from pets, smoke, and aerosols.
- Dispose of single-use items properly.
If you become ill, clean and disinfect your equipment more frequently to prevent reinfection.
