Recently, Max Mobility/Permobil expanded a voluntary FDA-classified Class I recall involving the SpeedControl Dial used with the SmartDrive MX2+ Power Assist Device. This article explains what the recall means, who is affected, and how Alpine can help you move forward safely.
What Is Being Recalled?
The recall applies to all SpeedControl Dials used with the SmartDrive MX2+ Power Assist Device, regardless of when they were purchased or if they were received as a replacement under a previous recall.
According to Permobil, the issue involves a design concern that may cause unexpected motor behavior, including:
- Continued movement when the device should stop
- Involuntary movement without user input
These issues could increase the risk of injury, especially at higher speeds or in close environments .
Why This Recall Was Expanded
Permobil originally initiated a recall in late 2024 for a limited production window. After continued monitoring and investigation, the company identified that the same design issue existed in all SpeedControl Dials manufactured between April 25, 2022 and July 8, 2025.
Because of this, the recall was expanded to include every SpeedControl Dial currently in use, including replacement units previously issued .
What Should You Do If You Use a SpeedControl Dial?
If you currently use a SpeedControl Dial, Permobil and Alpine recommend taking the following steps immediately:
- Stop using the SpeedControl Dial right away
- Switch to an alternate control method, such as:
- A wired SwitchControl (with optional Buddy Button)
- A compatible wearable device using the SmartDrive MX2+ app
- Acknowledge the recall notice using the official Permobil portal
The SmartDrive MX2+ power assist unit itself is not recalled and can still be used safely with an approved alternate controller .
