Figuring Out What Type of Scooter You Actually Need

Where you plan to use your scooter matters more than anything else. Those compact travel models are great for folding into your car, but they won’t get you very far on a single charge. The bigger outdoor scooters handle hills and grass but won’t fit through narrow doorways. Most people end up somewhere in the middle with a scooter that works both indoors and out.

Money matters too, obviously. The good news is insurance sometimes covers these when your doctor says you need one. Medicare has rules about it, and so do private companies like Aetna and Select Health. We deal with this paperwork all the time and can tell you what’s covered before you get your hopes up. If insurance doesn’t cover everything, we’ve got financing options that work for most budgets.

Travel Scooters That Fold

Folding scooters are awesome for portability — they break apart so you can fit them in your car trunk and take them anywhere. The heaviest piece is usually around 30–40 pounds, which some people can lift on their own. If lifting isn’t comfortable or possible, you can use a vehicle lift, a portable ramp, or bring a companion to help with loading. Even though they’re designed for transport, most models still have some weight to them, so planning ahead makes things easier. Expect a shorter battery range of about 8–12 miles per charge — perfect for grocery runs, appointments, and short trips around town.

Everyday Scooters for Real Life

Everyday scooters are game-changers. They’re sturdy enough for outdoor sidewalks yet agile enough to maneuver easily indoors — the perfect mix of comfort and convenience. With a smooth ride and a 15–20 mile battery range, you can go about your day with confidence. These scooters bring back a sense of freedom and independence, letting you enjoy errands, visits, and everyday life without limits. Once you start using one, it’s hard to imagine life without it!

Heavy-Duty Scooters for Serious Use

Heavy Duty scooters are built for comfort and confidence on tougher terrain. With larger wheels, stronger suspension, and powerful motors, they handle parks, campgrounds, golf courses, and other uneven surfaces with ease. Designed for stability and outdoor use, these models are ideal for taller or heavier riders, with weight capacities up to 450 pounds. They’re the go-anywhere, do-anything powerhouses of mobility.

Accessories and Maintenance You’ll Want for Your Scooter

A basket makes a huge difference for carrying groceries or a purse. Canopies help if you’re out in weather. Extra batteries extend how far you can go. If you can’t lift scooter parts into your car, vehicle lifts solve that problem, but add another expense.

Power mobility scooters need upkeep like any other machine. Batteries die if you don’t take care of them properly. Tires go flat. Brakes need adjusting. We handle all that stuff, and honestly, it’s better to have us do regular maintenance than wait until something breaks. Parts can be hard to find, and being stuck without your scooter is frustrating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get a power scooter or a power wheelchair?

If you can walk a little bit and transfer yourself in and out, scooters usually work better. They're easier to transport and typically cost less. Power wheelchairs make more sense for people who need full-time seating support or have limited arm strength. Come try both and see what feels right.

What's the difference between 3-wheel vs 4-wheel scooters?

3-wheel models turn tighter, so they're better indoors and in crowded places. 4-wheel scooters are more stable, especially outside or when you're going faster. Most people prefer 4-wheel for longer rides or if they're nervous about tipping.

How do I know what weight limit and battery range I need?

Get a weight capacity that's at least 50 pounds over what you weigh now - you'll be carrying stuff on the scooter, and it's better to have too much capacity than not enough. For range, think about the farthest you typically go in a day. Most people do fine with 10-15 miles of battery life.

Can I take my scooter on airplanes?

Yes, you can take an ADA power mobility scooter on an airplane. Most airlines allow you to ride it through the airport and to the gate, where staff will tag and stow it in the cargo hold. You’ll need to let the airline know in advance so they can confirm battery type — sealed lead-acid and lithium batteries must meet specific safety rules. The battery is usually disconnected or secured before loading, and the scooter is returned to you at arrival.

Do you deliver and set these up?

We deliver all over Utah and Idaho and set up everything at your house for a flat fee of $150. Our techs show you how all the controls work and make sure everything's adjusted right. We also handle repairs and battery replacement at our stores, so you're not stuck when something goes wrong.

Will Medicare pay for a power scooter?

Medicare will sometimes cover scooters when your doctor says you need one for getting around your house. They have specific rules about what qualifies and which models are covered. Private insurance works similarly but with different requirements. We've done this paperwork hundreds of times and can check your coverage before you buy anything.
