Walkers

GENERAL GUIDELINES
  • Walkers provide walking assistance by removing weight from the legs and transferring it to the arms & hands.
  • Walkers can also assist with standing.
  • It is important that your walker be properly adjusted for your height.
  • If you have any questions as to the use of your walker

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
  • The height of the handgrips should be slightly higher than your elbows.
  • Stand straight, and hold the handgrips. Your elbows should be bent at a 20 to 30 degree angle.
  • Check carefully to ensure all 4 walker legs are locked into position.
  • Bring your walker into any of our locations for a height adjustment.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
  • Prior to using the walker, perform safety/maintenance checks as described below.
  • Stand slightly behind the walker.
  • Lift the walker and place it a few inches ahead of you.
  • Step forward until your legs are even with the rear legs of the walker.
  • Take short, steady steps. Do not over-stride.
  • Do not step into the front of the walker, this could cause you to fall forward.
  • Repeat this process slowly until you are comfortable with it.
  • If you feel unsafe using your walker, discontinue use and contact us and/or your physician.

ALWAYS FOLLOW INSTRUCTION FROM YOUR PHYSICIAN/THERAPIST

SAFETY/MAINTENANCE CHECKS
  • If your walker folds/unfolds, always ensure it is locked in the unfolded position prior to use.
  • Regularly check your height adjustments to ensure they are locked into place.
  • Handgrips should be checked regularly for wear & tear. Damaged handgrips should be replaced immediately.
  • If your handgrip rotates, have it replaced immediately. This could cause you to fall.
  • Walker tips should be checked regularly. Replace them if they are damaged/worn.
