CPAP Diaries: Starting Therapy Again
|
CPAP Diaries:
Starting therapy again… |
I was given a CPAP several years ago but stopped using it. At my last doctor visit I was told to start using my machine. I am nervous to try it again. What can I do to ease back into therapy?
Your Physician is correct. Untreated sleep apnea can contribute or lead to many other health conditions including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression. Not to mention day time sleepiness, memory loss, and general irritability. Choosing to treat your sleep apnea is a choice that will affect almost every aspect of your life.
To begin therapy again you should contact your local DME provider. You will need new supplies including filters for your specific device, a new water chamber if you use a humidifier, new tubing and a new mask. One of the most exciting things in the area of sleep medicine is the advancement of masks.
Manufactures have designed many new masks which are comfortable and effective. Finding the right mask that works for you is essential.
Talk to your Respiratory Therapist about your concerns. They see many patients with the same concerns and can share with you some ideas that might help.
Education is key. Learn all you can about sleep apnea and therapy. Understanding the “why” makes treatment easier.
Remember that sleep therapy takes work but the benefits are well worth it. |
